Green Card Renewal
There aren't many things that are easy in the world of U.S. immigration law and dealing with the USCIS; however, the USCIS has made applying to renew a green card relatively painless. You can even apply online.
I am an immigration attorney and I honestly believe that there aren't too many immigration processes that can adequately be handled by a lay person but this is one that shouldn't be too much of a problem. (*One caveat to this, if you have had any criminal convictions or have lived outside the U.S. for more than 1 year you should consult an immigration attorney before you apply for renewal.)
How to renew your green card in a few easy steps
- Go to the USCIS website and print out a copy of Form I-90. Review this form carefully and gather all the information and documents you will need to complete this form online.
- Go to the USCIS E-Filing page and click on the "I am a new user link." Create an account. (*Click on the password hyperlink and read those instructions carefully. The password requirements are stringent)
- Select Form I-90 from the drop down menu and click "GO"
- Fill out the information requested in the online form.
- Fill out the certification page and check the box at the bottom that says "I intend to mail supporting documentation for this application."
- Enter your payment information and pay the required fee.
- You will receive a confirmation page when you submit the application. Print this out for your records and follow any additional instructions on this form.
Although this process is suitable for a do-it-yourselfer, if you have unique issues or would like assistance in preparing your application to renew your green card please contact us.
