The rules for the TN non-immigrant visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals have been changed to extend the time of admission. Under the old rules, a TN visa could only be issued for a initial period of 1 year. Although the TN could be renewed each year this short initial approval period was a hassle for TN non-immigrants working on longer-term projects in the U.S.
The USCIS recently adopted a proposed rule change to extend the initial authorization for TN visas for a period of 3 years. As before, the TN visa can be renewed indefinitely for periods of 3 years as long as the non-immigrant continues to meet the TN requirements.
